Station 1 Rulers Complete Station 1 section on the record sheet. Day 1 Explore 2 Station 1 Rulers Hang a ruler over the edge of the table in a way that 8 inches of the ruler hang over the table. Use less energy by strumming it lightly. Use more energy by strumming it harder. What happened to the sound as the energy increased? Circle the word loud or soft to describe the sound on your record sheet. EXTEND YOUR THINKING Move the ruler in a way that 4 inches of the ruler hang over the table. How did the sound change? (Write your answer on the record sheet.) Complete Station 1 section on the record sheet. Station Use Less Energy Use More Energy 1 LOUD or SOFT sounds LOUD or SOFT sound Extend Your Thinking How did the sound change when the ruler was 4 inches from edge of table?

Station 2 Rubber Bands Complete Station 2 section on the record sheet. Day 1 Explore 3 Station 2 Rubber Bands Stretch the rubber band around the top and bottom of a plastic cup. Use less energy by plucking the rubber band lightly. Use more energy by plucking the rubber band harder. What happened to the sound as the energy increased? Circle the word loud or soft to describe the sound on your record sheet. EXTEND YOUR THINKING Change the rubber band to a thicker one and pluck the band. How did the sound change? (Write your answer on the record sheet.) Complete Station 2 section on the record sheet. Station Use Less Energy Use More Energy 2 LOUD or SOFT sound Extend Your Thinking How did the sound change when you used a thicker rubber band?

Station 3 Paper Tubes Complete Station 3 section on the record sheet. Day 1 Explore 4 Make a tube out of the cardstock and secure sides with tape. Place the plastic wrap on top and secure with a rubber band. One partner uses less energy by humming lightly into the tube while the other partner observes what happens to the plastic wrap. Switch places and repeat. One partner uses more energy by humming loudly into the tube Circle the word more or less on the record sheet to describe how the plastic wrap moved. EXTEND YOUR THINKING Observe how the plastic wrap moves as your partner hums softly and harder. (Write your answer on the record sheet.) Complete Station 3 section on the record sheet. Station Use Less Energy Use More Energy 3 Plastic Wrap Moved MORE or LESS Extend Your Thinking Why did the plastic wrap move differently?

Station 4 Hangers Complete Station 4 section on the record sheet. Day 1 Explore 5 Hold the hanger upside down by the strings and wrap the strings around your index fingers. Put your fingers up to your ears. Use less energy by tapping the hanger against the table lightly. Use more energy by tapping the hanger against the table harder. What happened to the sound as the energy increased? Circle the word loud or soft to describe the sound on your record sheet. EXTEND YOUR THINKING Repeat the activity using a plastic hanger. How did the sound change? (Write your answer on the record sheet.) Complete Station 4 section on the record sheet. Station Use Less Energy Use More Energy 4 LOUD or SOFT sound Extend Your Thinking How did the sound change when you used a plastic hanger? Complete Station 5 section on the record sheet
