Sound: Amplitude & Pitch Essential Question: How are sound waves affected by changes in amplitude and pitch?
Sound is a form of energy. It comes from a vibrating source. Sound travels in invisible waves. Sound can travel through solids, liquids, and gases. Click.
What is a sound wave? Mechanical wave – longitudinal *A vibration *Particles of medium are disturbed *Causes a wave causes Most common medium is air Can.

Sound Unit. 1. Vibration – a rapid back and forth movement that produces sound.
Making Sound a longitudinal wave produced when matter vibrates – this in turn, causes the medium in which it is in to vibrate ex: tuning fork (the matter)

Presentation transcript:

Unit: Sound and Light Lesson 2 Properties of Sound Essential Questions: 1.) What affects pitch? 2.) What affects loudness? 3.) What causes the Doppler Effect?

What affects pitch? The pitch describes how high or low a sound seems.

Pitch depends on the frequency of the sound wave (the higher the pitch, the faster the vibration) Low pitch High pitch

What affects loudness? Loudness describes your awareness of the energy of sound.

Loudness depends on the energy and intensity of the sound wave.

What causes the Doppler Effect? The Doppler Effect happens when the motion of the source of the sound causes the waves to get closer or spread apart.
