Jose! Born to Dance Vocabulary

Stubborn adjective If you are acting stubborn, you are determined to do things your way. You are not willing to change what you are doing or how you are acting.

Stubborn This girl is being stubborn. She does not want to do what her mother asked her to do.

Stubborn Mules are considered very stubborn animals. If they don’t want to move, they won’t. Sometimes a stubborn person is described as being as stubborn as a mule.

Stubborn Have you ever been stubborn? Or do you know someone who is? Turn and tell your partner. Start by saying: “One time that I was stubborn…” or “My____ is very stubborn when…”

Hauling verb When you are hauling something, you are carrying or moving something.

Hauling In Nebraska we often see trucks hauling hay to feed cattle.

Hauling In some countries people have to haul wood long distances to use for making fire.

Hauling What are some things you have seen being hauled? See if you and your partner can think of 3 other things that can be hauled. Be ready to share your ideas with the class.

Hauling Haul and hall are homonyms. They sound the same but are spelled differently and mean different things.

Border noun A border is a boundary or an edge.

Border There is a fence on the border between the United States and Mexico.

Border The Missouri River forms the border Nebraska and Iowa.

Mournful adjective Something that is mournful is sad.

Mournful Sometimes songs in a show are mournful. They bring tears to the audience’s eyes.

Mournful When someone is feeling mournful, it helps to have a friend comfort them.

Mournful What is something that might make you feel mournful? Turn and tell your partner. Start by saying: _____ would make me feel mournful.

Towered past tense verb Use this sentence to figure out what the word towered means. The man on the stilts towered over the children. Think about the base word of towered. What does it mean? Can you figure out what towered means?

Towered Towered means stood over or taller than others. When I went to Chicago, the skyscrapers towered above us.

Towered The Redwood trees tower above everything else in the forest.

Towered What are some other things that tower over people? See if you and your partner can think of 3 more things. Be ready to share with the class.

Using context clues An actor is always nervous at his debut, or first performance. What does debut mean? What clue in the sentence helped you? Debut means the first performance in public.

Debut noun Taylor Swift made her singing debut in 2006. She was popular immediately.

Debut Many things can debut. New t.v. shows typically debut in the fall. The first time an athlete plays is his debut.

Toured past tense verb Justin Bieber toured, or traveled, around the country this summer. What does toured mean? Toured means traveled.

Toured Popular singers toured during the summer to put on concerts for their fans.

Toured When we went to England, we toured many castles.

Toured Where is a place you would like to tour? Turn and talk to your partner. Start by saying: “I would like to tour…”

Discouraged adjective Some musicians become discouraged, or disappointed, after a poor performance. What does discouraged mean? It means feeling disappointed or hopeless.

Discouraged The girl was discouraged when she couldn’t figure out the problem on the board.

Discouraged She is discouraged because she doesn’t know how she will ever get all her work done.

Discouraged Discouraged can also be a verb. It means trying to keep someone from doing something. Barack Obama and Mitt Romney want to discourage people from voting for their opponent.

Discouraged What is something that makes you discouraged? Turn and tell your partner. Start by saying: “I feel discouraged when…”

Triumph noun When someone has a triumph, they have had a success or have won something.

Triumph The team celebrates their triumph over the other team at the end of the game.

Triumph He celebrates his triumph by raising his arms and yelling.

Triumph noun Triumphant adjective Triumphantly adverb This summer the U.S. women’s gymnastics team were triumphant at the Olympics. It wasn’t until the last person competed that they knew they had a triumph. They wore their gold medals triumphantly for days afterwards.

Permission noun The musician is allowed to play in the subway. She was given permission. What does permission mean? What clue helped you figure it out? Permission means you are allowed to do something.

Permission You should always ask permission before petting someone’s dog.

Permission She is giving her daughter permission to borrow her car.

Permission What is something you have to ask permission to do at home or at school? Turn and tell your partner. Start by saying: “I have to ask permission to…”
