Vocabulary Fossil Terms March 10-14, mold The shape of a once-living thing left in sediment when rock formed.
What Are Fossils? Lesson 3 Big Shells: Ammonites were animals similar to squids with shells. They lived millions of years ago. The largest ammonite fossil.
Fossils. What is a fossil? A fossil is an impression, cast, original material or track of any animal or plant that is preserved in rock by natural processes.
Chapter 4 Views of Earth’s Past Pg Earth’s past is revealed in rocks and fossils.
Earth Science Grade 8. Animal Dies Scavengers eat most of the flesh Bacteria eats away at the rest Sediments cover the remains Groundwater starts to filter.
Earth’s History Chapters 29 & 30. Paleontology is the study of the life that existed in Prehistoric times. Traces of ancient life (fossils) are the basis.
FOSSILS 6 th Grade Science. OVERVIEW Explain what fossils are and how most fossils form. Explain what fossils are and how most fossils form. Describe.
 Petrified Fossils  Molds and Casts  Carbon Films  Preserved Remains  Trace Fossils.
What is Fossil? Fossils are traces or remains of living things from long ago. Fossils can be mineralized bones, teeth, shells, wood, or actual unaltered.
Learning Targets 1.Identify a mold and cast fossil. 2.Identify a trace fossil. 3.Identify a petrified fossil. 4.Identify preserved remains. 5.Identify.
Fossils. Essential Question How can fossils be used to help explain what happened in the past?
Remains of once living organisms. Form from decay and are buried by sediment. Sediment hardens into rock and preserves the shape of the organisms.
Fossils.
Is a visible shape that was left after an animal or plant was buried in sediment and then decayed was away Is a hole in rock A example is a hole in rock.
Bellwork12/8 and 12/9 The inherited combination of genes is known as the offspring’s genotype. An organism’s inherited appearance is called its phenotype.

Fossils. Fossils Remains or evidence of those organisms in layers of rock are called fossils. Remains or evidence of those organisms in layers of rock.
Created By Gina Wike. Fossils A fossil is evidence such as remains, imprints or traces of once living organisms preserved in rock A fossil is evidence.

Y6 EVOLUTION AND INHERITANCE LESSON 1: HOW FOSSILS ARE MADE www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk

What the fossil record is Today you will learn How fossils are formed What the fossil record is www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk

Starter question: WHAT IS A FOSSIL Starter question: WHAT IS A FOSSIL? DISCUSS IT WITH THE PERSON NEXT TO YOU www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk

FOSSILS ARE .. The remains or impression of a prehistoric plant or animal embedded in rock and preserved in petrified form. www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk

4 types There are 4 different ways in which fossils are formed and these are called MOLD, CAST, TRACE AND TRUE FORM www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk

A MOLD FOSSIL Made when a fossil dies and rots away, leaving a hard mold of its shape in the rock www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk

A cast FOSSIL A mold fossil that has become filled with sediment that has turned to rock, to give a 3d copy of the original

A TRACE FOSSIL The marks left behind by a living things from the past, such as footprints, burrowing holes or scratches on tree bark www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk

A TRUE FORM FOSSIL A fossil that preserves either all or part of the real organic material of the living thing. This can include parts of bone or teeth that are longer lasting than soft tissue.

What is the fossil record? The fossil record is a term that describes the way that the fossils have layered over time in the ground www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk

What is the fossil record? This is important because the further down we dig, the further we go back into the past to discover more primitive life-forms. www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk

What is the fossil record? We need this to learn how animals have changed over time, which confirms Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, which we will learn about in another lesson www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk

Tell the person next to you .. Learning check: Tell the person next to you .. How fossils are formed What the fossil record is www.primaryscienceworkshops.co.uk
