Planning your writing

Planning your writing BEFOre we start – discuss these questions in a small group Do you ever plan your writing? Is it a good idea to plan? Why do you plan? When do you plan? What kind of a plan do you use?

When do you plan? I Most people plan their writing when it is important, for example, formal letters or job applications. Sometimes we plan in our heads, without writing it down.

Why plan? Planning helps you to Find ideas to write about Organise your ideas logically Write in paragraphs Think about vocabulary, grammar and spelling

Why plan? YOU MUST WRITE A PLAN IN YOUR WRITING EXAM. IF YOU DO NOT – YOU WILL FAIL

Exam planning tips You must write your plan in the space provided. You must write your plan in English. You can plan your task how you want. For example, use a list or a spidergaph When you make a plan, you write down your ideas – do not write in sentences.

Writing in Paragraphs

Why use paragraphs? They help you to organise your ideas. They help your reader to understand you more easily. You must use paragraphs at E3.

What is a paragraph? Look at the text. How many paragraphs are there? How do you know where a new paragraph starts?

Setting Out Paragraphs In handwriting it is usual to indent the first line of each paragraph. In typed text we do not usually indent – we just leave a line. Be VERY clear with your paragraphs in your exam. If you forget you can add them with // (or you can write ‘new paragraph’ on the page)

Writing in paragraphs A paragraph is a collection of sentences with one main idea. A paragraph is usually more than one sentence – but sometimes one is OK. A new paragraph introduces a new idea.

Structure of paragraphs Most paragraphs have a similar structure: A topic sentence - the first sentence introduces the idea. Supporting sentences- the next sentence (or sentences) give(s) more information about the idea. A closing sentence - This may repeat the topic in a different way, or express what we think or how we feel about the topic.

Example: Topic sentence I enjoy going to college for so many reasons. You get to meet new people and make friends. I find the subject I’m studying quite challenging, but interesting. I really enjoy it! Supporting sentences closing sentence

Example: The sport of rugby league teaches self-discipline. For example, players are penalised for losing their temper or arguing with the referee. This self-control is an excellent thing for any sportsman. Topic sentence Supporting sentence closing sentence
