Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring

Factor the following quadratic equation: y = x2 – x – 12 Now, put the original equation into your calculator and find the zeros. What do you notice?

The Zero Product Property If we have a factored quadratic, we can set the factors equal to 0 to find the zeros (solutions, roots) of the function! y = (x – 6)(x + 2) x – 6 = 0 x = 6 x + 2 = 0 x = -2
