Multiplying Fractions by a whole number and multiplying fractions by fractions

There are a total of 6/3 or 2 whole rectangles Multiplying fractions can be thought of as “groups of” 6 groups of 1/3 or 6 x 1/3 There are a total of 6/3 or 2 whole rectangles

Multiplication of fractions by a whole number can also be thought of a taking a part of a whole. 1/3 of 6 whole rectangles or 1/3 x 6 There are two rectangles in each set Draw a smiley face in the bottom right hand side of your paper. 

This shows that 3 times the length of 2 inches is 6 inches Multiplication of fractions can also be thought of as scaling. 1/3 of the line that is 6 inches long. That would be 1/3 of 6 inches. 6 in. 2 in. 2 in. 2 in. 1/3 x 6 in. = 2 in. This shows that 3 times the length of 2 inches is 6 inches

Multiplying fractions by fractions 1/3 of ½ Shade in ½ of a rectangle Then, cut the rectangle into thirds and shade one third of the rectangle. The section that is colored both colors is your product. 1/3 of ½ is 1/6
