Multiplication of Decimals

Decimal Place The number of digits after the decimal is said to be the decimal-place of that decimal. E.g- 3.5 1- decimal place. 0.28 2- decimal place. 6.100 3- decimal place. 24 0- decimal place.

Multiplication of a decimal by a whole number 2 4 . 2 1 x 3 . 2 4 2 1 decimal-place = 2 x 3 decimal-place = + . 2 7 2 6 3 decimal-place = 2

Multiplication of a decimal by 10, 100, 1000, etc. 2 . 4 5 x 10 . . 2 4 5 x 10 = 2 4 5 0 = 2 4 . 5 2 2

2 . 4 5 x 1 0 0 . 2 4 5 x 1 0 0 = . 2 4 5 0 0 2 + 2 = 2 4 5 2 . 4 5 x 1 0 0 = 2 4 5

We saw that, 2 .4 5 x 1 0 = 2 4 .5 2 .4 5 x 1 0 0 = 2 4 5 Observation: After multiplication, the decimal moves as many as number of places as the number of ‘0’s. 2 .45 x 100 2 .45 x 10 No. of ‘0’ = 1 No. of ‘0’ = 2 2 . 4 5 2 . 4 5 2 4 5. 0 2 4 . 5

Find the product: a) 46.327 x 10 = 4 6 3 27 . = 463.27 . b) 0 . 0008 x 1000 = 0 0 0 0 8 = 0.8
