The Atom

The Atom The smallest particle of an element that can be divided and still be the same substance.

Inside Left Proton (+)- 1. Charge- Positive 2. Mass- 1 AMU (Atomic Mass Unit- SI unit for measuring the mass of atomic particles)

3. Location- nucleus 4. Atomic #= # of protons of an atom

5. All atoms of an element have the same number of protons.

Inside Center Neutron (o) 1. Charge- No charge or neutral 2. Mass- 1 AMU

3. Location- nucleus 4. Mass #= number of protons and neutrons.

5. Neutrons= atomic number (p) - mass number (p+n)

Nucleus- most of the mass of the atom found here.

Mass of proton + mass of the neutron Nucleus continued: Mass of proton + mass of the neutron

Inside Right Electron (-) 1. Charge- negative 2. Mass- almost zero

3. Location- electron cloud outside nucleus. 4. 1800 E= 1 P

5. Positive ions- # of P (+) is greater than # of E (-). Negative ions - # of E (-) > P (+)

6. Isotopes- atoms have different # of neutrons. # of P the same.
