Eisenhower’s Impact

President Eisenhower’s Impact Towards Vietnam The purpose of the Geneva Conference was to resolve political war problems Why was the US in Korea? Goal? Biggest Concern: Indochina War French- wanted to continue colonial control Viet Minh, Vietnamese Nationalist- Under control communist leader, Ho Chi Minh Who do you think the US would support?

Continued Problem: The Geneva Accords (1954) would state that the French would pull military forces from Vietnam. No foreign troops could interfere with-in a two year election period 17th Parallel Would the US agree to this? Effect: The US did not sign and agreed to support South Vietnam in developing a non-communist government and began giving financial and military assistance. KEY POINT: MARKED A TURNING POINT FOR THE US INVOLVEMENT IN VIETNAM.

What was President Eisenhower’s involvement leading up to the Vietnam war?

Kennedy’s Impact

President Kennedy’s Impact Towards Vietnam After the Geneva Conference, South Vietnam President Ngo Dinh Diem did not sign the agreement US would provide financial support and military assistance. Since then…. In the North Ho Chi Minh, founder of the Viet Minh (Vietnam Independence League) officially takes over control in North Vietnam In 1959, armed conflict broke out when Viet Cong a group of communist, who wanted to unite Vietnam, launched attacks on the U.S. military installations in South Vietnam. These attacks appeals to the North for help

Continued In 1963, South Vietnamese generals are planning a coup against President Ngo Dinh Diem Generals meet with the CIA to ensure that their coup would not interfere with the US providing financial and military assistance. US approves What happens? The plotters neglected to seal all roads leading to the palace nor cut the phone lines Diem calls for help using Viet Cong.

Kennedy was responsible for what key factor that enhanced the Vietnam war?

Johnson’s Impact

President Johnson’s Impact Towards Vietnam (LBJ) Johnson’s first Vietnam crisis: North Vietnamese torpedo boats fired on the American destroyer USS Maddox as it patrolled the Gulf of Tonkin (off coast of North Vietnam). Gulf of Tonkin Resolution: Johnson gets Congress to approve airstrike against North Vietnam. What does this mean? Johnson would use a military draft to send 1.5 million men into service during Vietnam. As an anti-war movement emerges, Congress and the American population divides between two: Doves and Hawks

Doves Vs. Hawks Supported Johnson’s policy on containing communism. Increase the amount of involvement to stop the spread of communism. Was a major part in the Cold War and stopping the domino theory. Disagreed with Johnson’s increased involvement in Vietnam Questioned the war Was not a war that the US should be involved in.

Johnson Continued LBJ changes strategies: Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense advises LBJ increase the military presence in Vietnam and do more of the fighting in order to win the war. In 1965, Johnson dramatically altered the U.S. role in the Vietnam War. Johnson began a bombing campaign in North Vietnam. Thought that if they bombed enough, NV would surrender How did they not? The Ho Chi Minh Trail was a crucial supply route for North Vietnamese forces to aid Viet Cong in South Vietnam. Bombing campaign- FAIL My Lai Massacre Viet Minh Pentagon Papers Doves Robert McNamara Ho Chi Minh Trail Viet Cong

Johnson Continued Roles switched for US and South Vietnam US- major role in the War South Vietnam- accepted a secondary, more limited position in the war. American Public’s Opinion: More US troops were being placed into Vietnam 1965- 636 American soldiers had died By 1968- 30,000 American soldiers had died American people began to question the US involvement in Vietnam

How did Johnson increase the US involvement in the Vietnam war?
