Solving Two-Step Equations Lesson 2-2

Learning goal

vocabulary properties – statements that are true for any number. Addition Property of Equality – If you add the same number to each side of the equation, the two sides remain equal. Subtraction Property of Equality – If you subtract the same number from each side of an equation, the two sides remain equal.

vocabulary Multiplication Property of Equality – If you multiply each side of an equation by the same numbers, the two sides remain equal. Division Property of Equality – If you divide each side of an equation by the same numbers, the two sides remain equal.

Solving Two-Step Equations 1. Our goal is to isolate the variable by itself on one side of the equal sign. 2. Determine what operations are being done to the variable. 3. Undo the operations in reverse order. Example: Solve 2x + 3 = 7 DO UNDO multiplying by 2 subtract 3 adding 3 divide by 2
