TSW identify the structure and function of an enzyme Enzymes TSW identify the structure and function of an enzyme

What is an enzyme? PROTEIN that speeds up a chemical reaction CATALYST: any substance that speeds up a chemical reaction

How does an enzyme work? They lower ACTIVATION ENERGY (the energy needed to get a chemical reaction started)

What does this look like?

Enzyme Action Enzyme binds to 1 or more of the reactants in a reaction The reactants that bind to the enzyme are called SUBSTRATES The site where the enzyme & substrate bind is the ACTIVE SITE The shape of the ACTIVE SITE is very specific (Lock & Key) to the SUBSTRATE

Enzyme Action The ENZYME-SUBSTRATE COMPLEX is formed when the enzyme and substrate connect, this lowers ACTIVATION ENERGY

Enzyme Action Product is released from the ENZYME-SUBSTRATE COMPLEX Key Point: The enzyme is NOT changed at all in this process

Enzyme Action 4. Enzyme is now free to react with another SUBSTRATE
