Demystifying doughnuts: a role for librarians in supporting the use of altmetrics 15 slides max Demystifying doughnuts: a role for librarians in supporting the use of altmetrics    Citations have been used for a long time to measure the impact of research. Now that the majority of journals are online it is possible to use other measures such as download figures, appearance in social media etc. You may have seen altmetrics "doughnuts". What do they represent and how effectively can they be used to measure the impact of researchers? Should librarians encourage the use of altmetrics and can we use them to engage with researchers? I will give an overview of the sources of altmetrics, the pros and cons, and consider how altmetrics can be used responsibly

Publisher sites Scopus a few notable venues such as the Public Library of Science (PLOS) and journals published by John Wiley & Sons have taken the major step of adding some altmetrics to all its online content. Additionally, in late 2013, Elsevier announced a pilot program with Altmetric to display altmetrics for the top three rated articles in 33 of its journals.14 Such aggregated metrics, should they gain traction, would naturally be a reflection of all user interactions with a journal, regardless of whether the person accessing the content was scholarly or not. As such, a theoretical criticism of venue-level altmetrics is that journals http://www.ala.org/acrl/sites/ala.org.acrl/files/content/publications/booksanddigitalresources/digital/9780838987568_metrics_OA.pdf Scopus

How do they do it?

Librarian role? Tell people about altmetrics Help with twitter and social media. Boosting altmetrics Encourage IDs such as ORCID Altmetrics in repositories Responsible metrics Metric Tide There is considerable scepticism among researchers, universities, representative bodies and learned societies about the broader use of metrics in research assessment and management. Good cover image – use? http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2017/02/14/tracking-the-digital-footprints-to-scholarly-articles-the-fast-accumulation-and-rapid-decay-of-social-media-referrals/ - twitter etc does lead to referrals but not nec citations.
