What is contrast in Romans? Not between faith and obedience See Romans 1:5 and Romans 16:26 Contrast between system of faith and a system of law or works. Problems in understanding justification by faith Thinking “faith only” when we hear “faith” Thinking “faith, repentance, confession and baptism” when we hear the word “gospel”

Justification By Law Not just “law of Moses” Romans 3:20 Would refer to any “law” system Really a trusting in “self” Romans 3:23

Justification By Faith A system of faith Recognizing our own inability Not trusting in self – Jeremiah 10:23 We should never lose sight of the fact we are “saved by grace” Obedience does not mean we have earned or merited salvation Cf. Joshua 6:2
