Learning Objectives I can determine what formal curriculum is taught in schools. I can analyze how the invisible curriculum influences learning. I can describe how forces shape school curriculum. I can explain how technology has affected the curriculum. I can explain how textbook publishers and state adoption committees “drive” the curriculum.

What is curriculum? Think about the word curriculum. In your own words, write down what curriculum means to you. Create a picture in your mind of curriculum. What does curriculum look like? Draw a picture.

Categories of Curriculum Visible curriculum Hidden (Invisible) curriculum Extracurriculum

Visible (Formal or Explicit) Curriculum The curriculum found in the textbooks, curriculum guides, courses of study, and other formal educational experiences. The explicit curriculum includes everything teachers are expected to teach, learners are expected to learn, and what schools are held accountable for. In Kentucky, these documents are the program of studies for each class, the core content for assessment, and academic expectations.
