Presentation transcript:

PHYSICS: About Science What is the definition of SCIENCE? • Science is the study of unanswered questions about nature and the universe. • Science is sometimes referred to as “natural philosophy.” • There are two main areas of science: LIFE SCIENCES Biology; Zoology; Botany; etc. PHYSICAL SCIENCES Astronomy; Geology; Chemistry; Physics; etc.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH EINSTEIN Q: Why is physics considered the most basic science? A: Physics is the study of the fundamental properties of nature including: motion, energy, force, etc.

Scientific Method What is the SCIENTIFIC METHOD? • The scientific method is a process used to gain, organize, and apply knowledge. • The following steps comprise the scientific method: Recognize a problem Make a hypothesis Predict the outcomes Perform an experiment Formulate the simplest, general rule

MATCH THE FOLLOWING WORDS TO THEIR CORRECT DEFINITIONS: A close agreement among scientists about a phenomenon Hypothesis: A body of knowledge that encompasses well-tested and verified hypotheses about nature Fact: Law (principle): An educated guess A hypothesis that is found to be true over and over again and not contradicted Theory:

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH EINSTEIN Q: What makes a hypothesis scientific? A: A hypothesis is scientific if an experiment can be done to prove that it is wrong.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH EINSTEIN Q: What is the difference between science and technology? A: Science is the study of our universe and questions about our universe. A: Technology is using science to solve practical problems.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH EINSTEIN Q: What is the difference between science, art, and religion? A: Art describes human experience in nature. A: Religion describes the purpose of nature.
