Characteristics of Dystopian Society Propaganda (biased information used to promote a specific POV) is used to control citizens. Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted. A figurehead is worshipped by the citizens. Citizens are under constant surveillance. Citizens have fear of the outside world. The natural world is banished and distrusted.

Characteristics continued… Citizens conform to uniform expectations. Individuality and dissent (difference in option) are bad. The society is the illusion of a perfect utopian world.

The Protagonist in a Dystopia Often feels trapped and is struggling to escape; Questions the existing social and political systems; Believes or feels that something is terribly wrong with the society; Helps the audience recognize the negative aspects of the dystopian world.
