Adding and Subtracting Polynomials Whats a polynomial?

Polynomials Expressions that use numbers and letters to describe mathematical situations Eg. 3x + 2, -4x -3, 5, 2y, etc.

Polynomials In the expression 3x + 2, 3x and 2 are called terms 3x is the variable term 2 is the constant term

Polynomials In the term 3x 3 is the coefficient x is the variable

Polynomials When we combine polynomials by adding or subtracting we must add or subtract like terms. Like terms have the same variables and exponents (Unlike terms cannot be combined by adding or subtracting because they have different variables or exponents.)

Polynomials Eg. 2y + 8y = 10y 3x² - 5x² = -2x² These go together because they are like terms. Unlike terms: 3x and 7y (different variables) 2x² and 6x (different exponents)

Polynomials Representing polynomials with algebra tiles Hand out the tiles. Identify the different tiles and what they represent. Link to measurement Now create the expressions on the board
