The Book of Titus Introduction & Titus 1:1-9 Titus 1:10-16 Titus 2:1-8

Leading Others to Sound Faith Titus 2:1-8 Instructions for Titus on how to help others have a sound faith. “Sound” = healthy (same word Lk. 5:31; 7:10) Used 3 of 5 times in our text (vv. 1, 2, 8) Attention is turned to family and individual life “This whole chapter deals with what might be called the Christian character in action.” (Barclay, 277) Three ways in which Titus could / should lead others to a sound faith

Leading Others to Sound Faith Titus 2:1-8 By Doctrine (vv. 1, 8) By Application (vv. 2-6) By Example (vv. 7-8)

Leading Others to Sound Faith Titus 2:1-8 By Doctrine (vv. 1, 8) By Application (vv. 2-6) By Example (vv. 7-8)

By Doctrine (vv. 1, 8) Speak Only Sound Doctrine That which is “proper” (fitting, suitable to) revealed will In contrast to what false teachers say (cf. 1:10-16) Anything else – is not healthy! Speak it Again and Again Lenski: “…continue to utter the things ….the present imperative supports and acknowledges what Titus has been doing and tells him to go on steadily in his course.” Has been & must continue Value in repetitive teaching (what heard before) Speak it for a Purpose – “that…” (results – vv. 2-6) Compare 1 Tim. 1:5

Leading Others to Sound Faith Titus 2:1-8 By Doctrine (vv. 1, 8) By Application (vv. 2-6) By Example (vv. 7-8)

By Application (vv. 2-6) Older Men (vv. 1-2) Sober – Temperate, sober; self-controlled, level headed Reverent – grave –dignified – serious “There is a dignity to old age that produces respect, and this respect gives an older saint authority.” (Weirsbe, 104) Serious does not suggest a long face Temperate – restraint, self control, prudent, thoughtful Temperate in thought, word & action “The old men ought to be the balance wheel of every congregation.” (Lenski, 910) Sound in faith – confidence & trust in God (word & rule) Sound in love – Grow richer in love – not be old crank Sound in patience – Endurance – don’t give up / example of facing trials & bearing burden and keeping on

By Application (vv. 2-6) Older Men (vv. 1-2) Older Women (vv. 3-4a) Reverent in behavior – example of reverence toward things holy Harmony with professing godliness (1 Tim. 2:9-10) “Moreover, these churches were new; the old converts had live a long pagan life. When these things are remembered, we shall understand.” (Lenski, 911) Not slanderers – “malicious gossips” (NASB) – word of adversary Not given to much wine Idea of gluttony Women of Crete were given to wine Teachers of good things Teach the younger women (i.e. vv. 4-5) Teach by precept & example

By Application (vv. 2-6) Older Men (vv. 1-2) Older Women (vv. 3-4a) Younger Women (vv. 4b-5) Love husbands – Must be taught / what it includes & involves Love children – Must be taught / what it includes & involves Discreet – prudent, thoughtful, self-control; “sober-minded” (ASV); “sensible” (NASB) “Wise” (NCV) Chaste – pure, holy Homemakers – “workers at home” (ASV, NASV); “fulfilling duties at home” (NET) “caring for the house; working at home” (Thayer / Wuest) Good – “Kind” (ASV); gentle, generous Obedient to husbands – submissive to his lead

By Application (vv. 2-6) Older Men (vv. 1-2) Older Women (vv. 3-4a) Younger Women (vv. 4b-5) Young Men (v. 6) Sober – minded Serious, to keep one’s head “The tendency of youth is to lightheartedness and frolic that lead to sin” (Lipscomb, 274) Points to maturity Be an Example (v. 7-ff)

Leading Others to Sound Faith Titus 2:1-8 By Doctrine (vv. 1, 8) By Application (vv. 2-6) By Example (vv. 7-8)

By Example (vv. 7-8) How (vv. 7-8a) Be an example / pattern of good works (v. 7a) Same instruction to Timothy (1 Tim. 4:12) Practice what teach (1 Tim. 4:16) Inconsistency renders teaching ineffective (Rom. 2:24) Be sound in doctrine (vv. 7b-8) In doctrine show: Integrity – purity in doctrine & character Reverence – dignity; serious about the work Incorruptibility – without hypocrisy / not corrupted by pressure of money “The word describes the quality of the teacher rather than of his doctrine. He is to preach the truth without fear or favour.” (Pulpit) Speech that cannot be condemned (v. 8)

By Example (vv. 7-8) How (vv. 7-8a) Effect (v. 8b) – no valid criticism Speech – cannot be condemned Opponent – has nothing valid to say Parallel to 1 Tim. 4:12
