By Application (vv. 2-6) Older Men (vv. 1-2) Sober – Temperate, sober; self-controlled, level headed Reverent – grave –dignified – serious “There is a dignity to old age that produces respect, and this respect gives an older saint authority.” (Weirsbe, 104) Serious does not suggest a long face Temperate – restraint, self control, prudent, thoughtful Temperate in thought, word & action “The old men ought to be the balance wheel of every congregation.” (Lenski, 910) Sound in faith – confidence & trust in God (word & rule) Sound in love – Grow richer in love – not be old crank Sound in patience – Endurance – don’t give up / example of facing trials & bearing burden and keeping on
