What is OPT ? An extension of your F-1 status. A temporary employment authorization directly related to your field of study. OPT employment authorization is granted for 12 months typically after completion of degree requirements. No job offer is necessary to apply for OPT

You need a job to be eligible to apply for OPT? False You can and should apply early. Applying during your last semester is advised. You can search for jobs while your OPT application is being processed by immigration.

Who is eligible to apply ? Students who are in F-1 visa status and have been enrolled on a full-time basis for the equivalent of one academic year; and Students who will be completing degree, certificate or program requirements this semester; and Students whose OPT employment will be directly related to their course of study.

When to apply for OPT ? 90 days prior to program end date. 60 days after program end date. Program end date!

What documents do I need to collect? Copy of your Butte College Graduation Application. Print your current I-94 – I94 - Official Website Photocopy of your visa and passport. (Passport must be valid) Check or Money order for $410 application fee. Made payable to “Department of Homeland Security” Two Passport size photos – 2inches by 2inches – taken within past 30 days. Lightly write your name and I-94 number on the back. You can get photos taken at Pharmacies (Wallgreens/CVS/Rite Aid, or Wallmart or Costco) I-765 application (https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-765.pdf) You can complete this with Immigration Advisor. *Copy of any previous EAD card issued*

Important Rules to remember to maintain your OPT status! You may not accrue more than 90 days of unemployment during OPT Employment must be related to your field of study The employment does not have to be paid employment You must work minimum 20 hours per week Employment authorization will begin on the date requested or the date the employment authorization is adjudicated ( approved), whichever is later.
