Mentawai Medicine Man and Child Mentawai Medicine Man and Child. The Mentawai people live in a dense, remote rainforest on Siberut Island, off the coast of Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Their life has remained virtually unchanged for generations. The traditional shamans are famous for their herbal medicine and beliefs that every creature and object has a soul of equal importance to our own. Their indigenous lifestyle is threatened by the economic development of their island. Photo ©Ben Rosner, MD, PhD. Crown of White. Andrea Giesbrecht's photo catches the eerie way in which hoarfrost reveals a new dimension on an otherwise plain prairie landscape. This photo was taken in late fall in southern Manitoba, Canada. The rare convergence of a rapid temperature decrease, highly saturated air, and solid objects, exposes newly condensed vapor molecules where they would otherwise pass undetected.
