5.6 More on Polynomials To write polynomials in descending order.. To evaluate polynomials.

To write a polynomial in descending order: The term with the greatest exponent is written first. The term with the next greatest exponent is written next, and so on. If there is a constant, it is written last. 8x4 + 3x2 –2x +5

Arrange is descending order for the variable “x” 3x + 3 + 4x7 – 4x6 4x7 – 4x6 + 3x + 3

Arrange is descending order for the variable “x” 7xy5 + 5x3y3 – 3x2y 5x3y3 – 3x2y+ 7xy5

-5x5 + 16x3 + 5x2 - 7x -19

-x5y2 – 9x4 + x3 – x2y3 + 7xy + 10

x4y – 6x3y5 – x2y +x -17

Collect Like Terms and Then Arrange in Descending Order 4x³ + 3x ²+ 5x³ -2x² 4x³ + 3x ²+ 5x³+ -2x² 9x³ + x²

Evaluating a polynomial: Replace the variable with a number and calculate the result. Example: Evaluate 3x + 5 for x = 6 3(6) + 5 = 23
