Plot Definition: Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

1. Exposition This occurs at the outset, or beginning, of a short story. The characters and setting are introduced. It is the basic situation or starting point of a story.

2. Rising Action This part of the story develops the conflict(s), builds interest or creates suspense.

Inciting Incident The first event that sparks the central conflict (main problem) in the story.

Complication(s) Events that complicate the central conflict (main problem).

3. Climax This is the turning point of the story. It is the most intense moment. The main character often will change in some way.

Cliff Hanger The author concludes with the climax of the story. There is no falling action or resolution.

4. Falling Action All action following the climax. The loose ends of the plot are often tied up. The author is bringing the story to a close.

5. Resolution The author typically resolves the central conflict. The story comes to a reasonable ending.
