The Importance of Building 21st Century Learners “This is a story about the big public conversation the nation is not having about education… whether an entire generation of kids will fail to make the grade in the global economy because they can’t think their way through abstract problems, work in teams, distinguish good information from bad, or speak a language other than English.” How to Build a Student for the 21st Century, TIME Magazine, December 18, 2006

Learner Profile Attributes Organization: What is the Erindale/IB Mission? How does it build the 21st Century Learner? We are motivated by a mission to create a better world through education. Mission Statement: The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programmes on international education and rigorous assessment.” Erindale offers an ideal setting for students to pursue academic success, citizenship, and personal growth. 21st Century Learner Learner Profile Attributes E.S.S IB

What is the learner profile. Why is it important What is the learner profile? Why is it important? It’s the IBO mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. IB learners strive to be: Inquirers Knowledgeable Thinkers Communicators Principled Open-minded Caring Risk-takers Balanced Reflective The attributes of the learner profile express the values inherent to the IB continuum of international education. It provides a long-term vision of education.  Thus, it is a set of ideals that can inspire, motivate and focus the work of school and teachers, uniting them in a common purpose. Erindale Secondary School teaching and learning is rooted in the learner profile.

Programs: What makes the Diploma Program special Programs: What makes the Diploma Program special? A rigorous two year pre-university course that leads to examinations. Designed for students aged 16 to 19 (Grades 11 – 12 at Erindale Secondary School) Diploma students take six subjects plus they write a 4,000 word extended essay, complete a course in theory of knowledge, and complete a number of creativity, action and service (CAS) projects. Rigorous and relevant curriculum that meets the needs of the 21st century learner. Up to 36 college credits for coursework As a result the diploma is well recognized by the world’s leading universities The Diploma Program is a very rigorous curriculum All of our students will not complete the full diploma program, but a large percentage of our students will take one or more of the IB diploma classes. In schools where the classes are offered to all students, approximately 75-80% of the students take one or more IB classes.

Why do our students need IB as preparation for university and beyond? “There is remarkable consensus among educators and business and policy leaders on one key conclusion: we need to bring what we teach and how we teach into the 21st Century.” TIME Magazine, December 18, 2006 21st Century Learner Leaner Profile Attributes E.S.S IB
