Floating and Sinking Chapter 11 Section 2

Buoyancy Buoyant force is the upward force exerted by a fluid on a submerged object. The buoyant force acts in the direction opposite to the force of gravity, so it makes an object feel lighter.

Buoyancy If an object’s weight is greater than the buoyant force, a net force acts downward on the object. The object will sink If the weight of an object is equal to the buoyant force, no net force acts on the object. The object will not sink If the weight is less than the buoyant force then the object will float.

Archimedes’ Principle Water Displacement Archimedes’ principle states that the buoyant force acting on a submerged object is equal to the weight of the fluid the object displaces.

Density The density of a substance is its mass per unit of volume. Density = Mass Volume Si units = g/cm³

Density An object that is more dense than its fluid will sink. An object that is less dense than its fluid will float. If the density is equal, it will neither float nor sink. It will float at a constant depth.
