Statewide Oral Boards Examinations: A Quarter of a Century of Practice Dhara Amin, M.D., Natasha Thomas, M.D., Rosaura Fernandez, M.D., Lauren Smith M.D., Michelle Sergel, M.D. Cook County Health and Hospital System, Chicago, IL Oral board examinations are a mandatory requirement for national board certification in emergency medicine (EM) Oral boards preparation is part of standard curriculum at EM programs across the country There is an inherent bias in conducting the exam with a familiar face Similar comforts are not allowed during the national board exams conducted by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) Cook County Emergency Medicine sought to address this bias by conducting statewide oral board exams for all 7 EM programs in Illinois Introduction Objective Curriculum Design Impact

Statewide Oral Boards Examinations: A Quarter of a Century of Practice Dhara Amin, M.D., Natasha Thomas, M.D., Rosaura Fernandez, M.D., Lauren Smith M.D., Michelle Sergel, M.D. Cook County Health and Hospital System, Chicago, IL Introduction Create a curriculum for oral boards practice that would simulate the true environment of national oral board examinations Objective Curriculum Design Impact

Statewide Oral Boards Examinations: A Quarter of a Century of Practice Dhara Amin, M.D., Natasha Thomas, M.D., Rosaura Fernandez, M.D., Lauren Smith M.D., Michelle Sergel, M.D. Cook County Health and Hospital System, Chicago, IL All 7 EM programs in Illinois are sent invitations to participate in mock oral boards examinations annually Volunteer faculty are expected from every program participating Each institution submits a new oral boards case to be added to our inventory Cook County Emergency Medicine faculty leaders design a schedule grid spanning over 2 days to allow all Illinois EM senior residents to be examined by a faculty member from a different institution Each examinee is tested with two single cases, and one triple case, just like the national oral board examination Scores are tabulated and sent to each EM program Introduction Objective Curriculum Design Impact

Statewide Oral Boards Examinations: A Quarter of a Century of Practice Dhara Amin, M.D., Natasha Thomas, M.D., Rosaura Fernandez, M.D., Lauren Smith M.D., Michelle Sergel, M.D. Cook County Health and Hospital System, Chicago, IL The Illinois statewide oral board examination curriculum has been a success for over 25 years Cook County Emergency Medicine has hosted it every year, and we believe it is an invaluable experience for Illinois senior residents Our statewide approach is more effective in emulating the environment of the ABEM oral board examinations This approach could easily be replicated in any city or state Our future goal is to conduct a retrospective analysis of the oral boards pass rates for senior residents in Illinois who participated compared to the national pass rates, we hypothesize the pass rate for our residents would be higher.
