Homework Look over your notes!

The Moon

Why does the moon have craters?

Why does the moon have craters? There is no atmosphere. There is no weathering or erosion.

What Causes the Phases of the Moon?

What Causes the Phases of the Moon? The moon’s revolution around the Earth.

How long does one revolution of the moon take? - A revolution is the object moving around another object. - It takes 27.3 days.

How long is one Rotation? The rotation is the spinning on its axis!

We only ever see one side of the moon because …. Moon Rotation = Moon Revolution!

The part of the moon you can see is getting larger. What is “Waxing”? The part of the moon you can see is getting larger.

The part of the moon you can see is getting smaller. What is “Waning”? The part of the moon you can see is getting smaller.

Why do we see the phases of the mooN? The moon is seen because sunlight is reflected off of it.

Sun lights side of moon not facing Earth. New Moon Sun lights side of moon not facing Earth. No Moon Seen

Waxing Crescent Moon You see less than ¼ of the lit side of moon. (Waxing = Getting bigger, you see right side)

You see the RIGHT 1/2 of the lit side of the moon. “D” First Quarter Moon You see the RIGHT 1/2 of the lit side of the moon. “D”

Waxing Gibbous Moon See over 3/4 of the right, lit side of the moon. (Waxing = Bigger, You see right side)

Full Moon You see whole lit side of the moon. (This is really only ½ of the moon.)

Waning Gibbous Moon You see over ¾ of the left, lit side of the moon (Waning= Smaller, You see left side)

Third Quarter Moon You see ½ of the lit side of moon, it is the LEFT side. (This is really only ¼ of moon.)

Waning Crescent Moon You see less than 1/4 of left side of moon. (Waning= Smaller, You see left side)

The Sun lights side of the moon not facing the Earth. New Moon The Sun lights side of the moon not facing the Earth. NO MOON SEEN

Name that phase of the moon!
