Objectives U.S. wanted the island due to its location. It was half way between Japan and American bomber bases in the Marianas Japanese called for “No Japanese Survivors” They also wanted to kill 10 Americans before they themselves were killed.

Day One 110,000 Marines came in 880 ships Due to the heavy bombing, the ridges in the sand created good hiding places for Japanese snipers. Marines lost 10,000 men on the first day, but were able to cut the island in half.

Other Important Events February 23- Marines reach the top of Mount Suribachi. March 25- Last pocket of Japanese resistance is secured at Kitno Point. March 26- Island is declared secure.

Totals There were 1,083 Japanese POW’s. An est. 20,000 Japanese died. Marines lost 23,573 out of 70,000 soldiers. There were 2,648 soldiers wounded.

Demosthenes Andros 5th Marine Division of the 28th Marines. One night, when he was sleeping in his hole, a shrapnel landed four feet from him, and covered his whole lower body with sand. The blast didn’t even wake him up. He went to go get water and food for his unit, and took two of his buddies with him but he was the only one the returned.

John Bradley It's five miles long. If you're in a car going 60 mph, it takes you 5 minutes to cover it. It took us 36 long days to conquer it. He was in “Easy Company,” which had 84% casualties. At other places, they buried by individual grave. When they buried on Iwo Jima they buried by row -- rows of a hundred boys. He said that they needed surveyors to mark the lines.

The Photo The picture was taken by Joe Rosenthal. He won the Pulitzer Prize for it. The front four are (left to right) Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley*, John Bradley and Harlon Block*. The back two are Michael Strank* (behind Sousley) and Rene Gagnon (behind Bradley).
