QRT Activity You have 3 minutes to read history and symptoms of Patient A and Patient B on page 162-163 In two minutes, write down as many questions as you can that you would have to know figure out what disease each patient has.

You have 15 minutes to complete the following tasks: What is the structure and function of a red blood cell? Use the internet (phone or laptop) to research the structure and function (job.) Use red playdough to construct a model of a red blood cell. The container should hold enough playdough for 2-4 people. How is the structure important to the function of red blood cells? How will you collect data? Diagnosis Time! Observe and compare two patient's blood samples to normal human blood in order to determine which diseases they have. Patient Histories You are doctor who has recently seen two patients who reported similar symptoms. From your examination of each patient you have gathered more information, which is shown below. Patient A Patient b Reports periods of feeling sick, but feels well most of the time. Recently returned from working in Africa with the Peace Corps. Repots frequent fevers, chest pains, and lung infections throughout youth and adulthood. After a two-hour hike a few months ago, she became so tired and out off breath that physical movement was difficult. She experienced joint and muscle pain in her arms and legs. Symptoms seen on examination day: Vision problems and yellowing of eyes and skin. Abdominal area is tender to the touch. Reports becoming sick shortly after returning from a trip to Africa in the past month. Reports severe headaches and fatigue for the past few weeks. Reports a fever and muscle and joint pain in the past week. Symptoms seen on examination day: Yellowing of the eyes Abdominal area is tender to the touch.

SCHOOLOGY ASSIGNMENT: Worth 20 Summative points each! Make a claim on which diagnosis Patient A should receive; Use the patient history and symptoms, your observations of the blood cells and the background information about the four diseases to provide evidence that supports your diagnosis. Repeat this process for Patient B. Be sure to be as specific as possible. Check the Bowen Biology WordPress site and Schoology for the assignment as well.
