Definition of the Intervention Our intervention was to provide families with a comprehensive review of their child’s screening results and then, if needed, make an appropriate plan. We decided to create a version tailored to our site but we used the Birth to Five: Watch Me Thrive as a guide.

Description of the Intervention

How is the intervention carried out? During the visit prior to administering the ASQ, the home visitor would explain that an administration would be coming up next visit. The home visitor would then introduce the Developmental Screening Passport focusing on the purpose of screening and the key to understand their child’s score. The next visit, the home visitor would then administer the ASQs with mother and child. The home visitor would elicit any concerns from mother. The home visitor would tell the mother that next visit, they would review the ASQ scores and complete the Developmental Screening Passport. During the following visit, the home visitor would bring a copy of the scored ASQ to the mother and begin to discuss the scores while the mother fills in the Developmental Screening Passport. If necessary, the home visitor would then help the mother to make an action plan if needed. The home visitor would ensure that if a referral was necessary that it was a part of the action plan. The mother then keeps the Developmental Screening Passport in her parent handbook.

Evidence that the intervention is effective We used qualitative data to evaluate whether families liked the Passport. we were able to give the passports to ten families. We received surveys from all ten. The feedback from the surveys was positive overall – all ten families stated that the passport helped them understand their child’s development and their screening scores better. The home visitors also stated that helped them facilitate the conversation about the scores with families more easily and provided them with another opportunity for providing activities, discussing referral opportunities and eliciting any parental concerns.

Advice Barriers / Challenges Key advice to overcome barriers Getting parents to understand the value of the passport. Use with families early on in the program, preferably before the first ASQ administration. It is difficult to introduce after a family has been in the program awhile. A screening passport that fits with your program’s language/message. We decided to create our own! 
