INSECTS

Insects are . . . . . . Invertebrates, animals with no internal structures to support their bodies.

How are insects classified? Kingdom – Animalia Phylum – Arthropoda Class – Hexapoda (Insects)

What is an Arthropod? An animal with an exoskeleton and bendable, jointed legs. insects arachnids centipedes and millipedes crustaceans

What is an insect? Six legs Three body parts Hard shell

What is an insect? Antennae “feelers” Compound eyes Two pairs of wings

How do insects fit in? Insects are the most populous and diverse class of organisms in the animal kingdom. Make up over half of the living things on earth. Insects can live in almost every environment. Land or water Insects are well adapted for all types of environments. Body type, shape, attachments, etc.

Bad Bugs parasitic destroy crops spread diseases

Good Bugs maintain nature’s balance part of many food chains pollinate flowers decomposition

True Bugs A special group of insects in the Order Hemiptera with a long, jointed feeding tube used for piercing and sucking. Examples – assassin bugs, bed bugs & stink bugs

The Exoskeleton A hard covering on the outside of the body used for protection and support. It is made up of chitin. strong but flexible

The Head Eyes Mouthparts Antennae simple compound specialized structures based on diet Antennae “feelers” sensory organs

The Thorax Legs Wings 3 pairs jointed Note: Some larvae have leg-like appendages on the abdomen. Wings one or two pairs Note: Some insects are wingless.

The Abdomen Organs digestion reproduction No appendages used for moving on the abdomen of adults. Sometimes there are some appendages at the end of the abdomen.
