Historical Engineers This presentation is about historical engineers

Archimedes (287 BC-212 BC) One of the first to apply mathematics to physical phenomena Designed machines such as the screw pump and compound pulleys that we still use today Archimedes, credited for saying “eureka” upon a successful discovery, was one of the first scientists to apply math to natural phenomena. For example, he discovered that he could measure the density of an irregular object by submerging the object in a tub to find its volume and then dividing its mass by that volume. Archimedes is still considered one of the greatest engineers of all times. We still use his inventions such as the screw pump and compound pulleys over 2,000 years later.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) Able to envision mechanized innovations that would one day be used Helicopters, tanks, artillery Leonardo da Vinci was the definition of a renaissance man because he excelled at so many different academic subjects. His creativity was unmeasurable and he was able to envision mechanized innovations such as helicopters, tanks, and artillery 400 years before the technology was available.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) Designed & built wide range of projects, including railways, bridges, & ships Used logic & analysis to reshape the mechanical & structural engineering of his time Isambard Kingdom Brunel revolutionized the transportation industry. He designed and build various projects such as railways, bridges and ships to make transportation easier and faster. He was able to use logic and analysis to reshape the mechanical and structural engineering of his time.

Thomas Edison (1847-1931) “If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” Great vision Many technological contributions Over 1,000 patents in his lifetime Thomas Edison’s inventions have transformed our every day lives. He was an inventor who shaped electricity, phones, and car batteries to become the way they are available today. Edison once said, ““If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” He astounded many with his uncanny ability to visualize new technologies and was able to bring many inventions to life. The fact that he had over 1,000 patents in his name over his lifetime is testament to his creativity. However, it is unknown how many of Edison’s inventions were actually his inventions as opposed to the inventions of his staff that he took credit for.

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) Designed the modern alternating currents (AC) electric supply system Worked on wireless international communication, RADAR, induction motors, and X-rays machines Nikola Tesla once worked for Thomas Edison, and developed ideas for many inventions that he did not receive credit for until recently. He Designed the modern alternating currents (AC) electric supply system which was more practical than Edison’s direct current (DC) He also was one of the first engineers who worked on wireless international communication using radio waves, RADAR, induction motors and X-rays.

Charles Proteus Steinmetz (1865-1923) Electric motors Built on Tesla’s studies about alternating currents Charles Proteus Steinmetz was a pioneer in the field of electrical engineering He improved upon the electric motor, and built on Tesla’s studies about alternating currents

Henry Ford (1863-1947) Designed his first vehicle—Quadricycle Founded Ford Motor Company Introduced “everyman’s car” or Model T Creator of the Assembly Line Henry Ford designed his first vehicle—Quadricycle and founded Ford Motor Company He introduced “everyman’s car” or Model T and created the Assembly Line which increased production speed

Dr. Robert Goddard (1882-1945) His designs were basis for rockets that launch astronauts into space, deliver warheads to distant countries, & carry communication satellites into orbit Dr. Robert Goddard invented the process used for liquid fueled rockets His designs were basis for those that launch astronauts into space, deliver warheads to distant countries, & carry communication satellites into orbit
