November 2009 doc.: IEEE 802.11-09/1160r0 November 2009 Abstract Proposed update to TGad Evaluation Methodology to include declaration of how coexistence requirements from TGad PAR and Functional Requirements are handled. John R. Barr, JRBarr, Ltd. John R. Barr, JRBarr, Ltd.
TGad Coexistence Requirements November 2009 TGad Coexistence Requirements From the TGad PAR: It is in the best interest of users and the industry to strive for a level of coexistence between wireless systems. VHT will investigate coexistence with other systems in the 60 GHz band. One approach will be to investigate a common PHY between VHT and 802.15.3c, and adopt if feasible. Another approach is a common coexistence mechanism that may be used by other 60 GHz systems From TGad Functional Requirements: [Req08] The system is required to support mechanisms that enable coexistence with other systems in the band including IEEE 802.15.3c systems. John R. Barr, JRBarr, Ltd.
60 GHz Coexistence Assumptions November 2009 60 GHz Coexistence Assumptions TGad will use same channel frequencies as 802.15.3c. 802.15.3c systems will scan for presence (detect CMS beacons or sync frames) of “piconets” in each channel and avoid using a channel that is “occupied”. 802.15.3c systems using a channel will broadcast superframe beacons at least once every 66mS identifying the piconet and when channel will be used during each superframe. If the beacon is sent using a mode other than the Single Carrier (SC) Common Mode Signaling (CMS), a sync frame using CMS will be sent each superframe. 802.15.3c devices transmit without LBT when CTA allocated for their use. John R. Barr, JRBarr, Ltd.
Possible Coexistence Mechanisms (1) November 2009 Possible Coexistence Mechanisms (1) Prior to starting a BSS, scan target channel for at least 100mS (or some other time larger than 66mS) for presence of other 60GHz traffic and only use channels that are available. Only requires detection of preambles by AP if they are common with 802.15.3c. If capable of receiving and decoding 802.15.3c beacons or sync frames, a BSS may be established in the same channel as long as transmissions are only scheduled during CAP (CMS beacon) or other open periods for each superframe. Requires support for 802.15.3c CMS and ability to decode beacon or sync frame (similar formats) by all stations. John R. Barr, JRBarr, Ltd.
Possible Coexistence Mechanisms (2) November 2009 Possible Coexistence Mechanisms (2) If AP is capable of joining a 802.15.3c piconet as a child piconet, it can allocate private time during each superframe and only schedule TGad channel availability during that time. Requires support of 802.15.3c CMS and limited set of 802.15.3c MAC commands by the AP. Non-AP devices only need to be able to listen to AP beacons and schedule transmissions during the allocated time. John R. Barr, JRBarr, Ltd.
November 2009 Evaluation Criteria Proposal has ability to avoid channels occupied by 802.15.3c and other 60GHz radio systems. Proposal has ability to utilize open time slots when necessary to use channel occupied by 802.15.3c piconet. Proposal has ability to allocate 802.15.3c time slot and schedule TGad transmissions in that time slot when necessary to use channel occupied by 802.15.3c piconet. John R. Barr, JRBarr, Ltd.
Proposed Update to TGad Evaluation Methodology 11/296r7 November 2009 Proposed Update to TGad Evaluation Methodology 11/296r7 4.4 Coexistence Capabilities 1. (Mandatory) Proposal has ability to avoid channels occupied by 802.15.3c and other 60GHz radio systems. 2. (Optional) Proposal has ability to utilize open time slots when necessary to use channel occupied by 802.15.3c piconet. 3. (Optional) Proposal has ability to allocate 802.15.3c time slot and schedule TGad transmissions in that time slot when necessary to use channel occupied by 802.15.3c piconet. John R. Barr, JRBarr, Ltd.
