What are the Sustainable Development Goals? Millennium Development Goals – 8 goals from 2000-2015 What are the Sustainable Development Goals? UNDP developed these as a universal call to action In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030. The Global Goals “Agenda 2030” is hugely ambitious; there are 17 goals underpinned by 169 targets agreed at the political level. Sustainable Development Goals – 2015-2030 The United Nation Development Programme developed these 17 goals after the success from the 8 MDGs from 2000-2015 UN – Global intergovernmental organisation – 193 states. Founded after World War 2 to avoid something like that in the future. The UNDP is the UNs Global Development Network. Sustainable – what does sustainable mean? The objectives that are put in place are in order to create a sustainable world – it’s important that while combatting issues in the present, they do not have an adverse affect in the future.

What issues do we face today? 1. Get the students to list some of the issues which they think are prominent in the world, or their community today The class should then share their ideas - Draw a chart on the board of issues that face the UK and issues that face the world – compare similarities and differences 2. We will then decide which issues link to which goal. 3. Student should pick one of the goals and fill in the questions table in the workbook.

Here are the top the top performers: The SDG Index measures 149 countries, comparing their current progress with a baseline measurement taken in 2015. Here are the top the top performers: Is anyone shocked by the index ranking? Is there anyone that you expected to be on there that isn’t? Anyone on there that you didn’t expect?

Reflections What are the Sustainable Development Goals? They are from 2015- ? How many countries have agreed to work towards them? What can they also be known as? What were the Millennium Development Goals? They are 17 goals developed as a universal call to action, the three main aims are – social progress, economic growth and environmental protection. 2030 193 world leaders Sustainable Development Goals, Global Goals or SDGs They were 8 goals from 2000-2015 that were put into place to encourage similar progress. It was after the success of these that the SDGs were created.
