Small Group Discussion

GROUP 1 Have you ever found a smart phone? What did you do? If you haven’t, what do you think you would do? Is stealing ALWAYS wrong? When is it right to steal? Would you jump into a deep river to save a drowning animal? Group 3 Would you risk your life to save another person? If you could save people by killing one person, would you? Should poor people be punished for stealing if they are stealing to feed their family? GROUP 2 What should a person do if they find a wallet? What do people usually do? What would you do? How often do you lie? When is it okay to lie? If you saw a pickpocket taking someone’s wallet what would you do?

You just discussed issues involving ethics and decision making!

What informs or shapes ethics? Our concepts of ethics have been derived from religions, philosophies and cultures. They infuse debates on topics like abortion, human rights and professional conduct. What else might shape our ethics and values?

What can ethics do for us? Ethics can provide a moral map They can guide us on how to live and answer difficult questions Ethics can pinpoint a disagreement They can show us why people are disagreeing and show what each group values Ethics can provide several answers They can help us realize that life is not black and white nor is there usually one perfect and easy answer in many discussions
