Predicting Products Target 4-2

Target 4-2 I can predict products by identifying and interpreting types of reactions.

Reading Reactants Check for oxygen (O2) and an organic compound (C and H)  Combustion Check for an acid (H__) and base (__OH)  Acid-Base Is it one element and one compound?  Single Replacement Is it two compounds?  Double Replacement

Predicting Products Combustion In a combustion reaction, the products are always CO2 + H2O

Predicting Products Combustions Ex) C2H6 + O2  Ex) CH2O + O2 

Predicting Products Acid-Base The H from the acid and the OH from the base form H2O The “leftover” elements form an ionic compound The one farther left on the periodic table goes first in the formula Must balance charges

Predicting Products Acid-Base Ex) H2S + KOH  Ex) HBr + Ca(OH)2 

Predicting Products Single Replacement The element that starts by itself will trade places with the first element in the compound The second element in the compound will stay in the compound The new compound is ionic – must have balanced charges If you have two positive charges together, you switched the wrong element!

Predicting Products Single Replacement Ex) K + AuF2  Ex) Ca + CsCl 

Predicting Products Double Replacement The first element in each compound are the ones that trade places. Both new compounds are ionic – must have balanced charges! If you have 2 positive or 2 negative charges together, you switched the wrong elements!

Predicting Products Double Replacement Ex) Cs2O + CaS  Ex) SrBr2 + LiF 

Exit Ticket Tell the TYPE of reaction. Then predict the PRODUCTS. TiCl2 + SrO  HBr + Mg(OH)2  C2H5OH + O2 
