Some principles: sample always base size on 80% power for what would be a meaningful effect size (usually 1-5% difference in pivotal trials, i.e. those that will form basis for recommendations) usually use dependent smokers (not students) recruit from community or healthcare settings minimise exclusion criteria in pivotal trials, allow for up to 50% wastage IV.
