Prohibition During the 1800’s, many reformers had work to reduce alcohol use in the United States. Eventually supporters of temperance began supporting prohibition, a total ban on alcoholic drinks. In WW1, support for prohibition grew. The Experiment Fails There was a drop in alcohol consumption However, the law proved impossible to enforce People would smuggle liquor across the border of Canada and the Caribbean, they were called bootleggers.
