Changes in American Society Chapter 22 Section 2 Changes in American Society

Prohibition During the 1800’s, many reformers had work to reduce alcohol use in the United States. Eventually supporters of temperance began supporting prohibition, a total ban on alcoholic drinks. In WW1, support for prohibition grew. Many Americans saw it as a way to conserve grain during the war The states ratified the 18th amendment, 1919, in response to The 18th amendment prohibited making, selling, or transporting alcohol In 1919, the 18th amendment bans the use and sale of alcohol

The Experiment Fails There was a drop in alcohol consumption However, the law proved impossible to enforce People would smuggle liquor across the border of Canada and the Caribbean, they were called bootleggers. Every large town had its speakeasies, or illegal taverns that served liquor. The money made by bootlegging encouraged the growth of organized crime In February 1933, Congress approved the 21st Amendment, repealing Prohibition Saloons shut down, and people were arrested for drunkenness http://stopthedrugwar.org/taxonomy/term/167?page=15 https://www.google.com/search?q=prohibition+failed&safe=strict&rlz=1C1GGGE___US549US564&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi80bm23NnKAhVDkIMKHVdbAq0Q_AUIBygB&biw=1600&bih=799#imgrc=F2gWGbBPBm62UM%3A

Changing Lives of Women Following the 19th Amendment, women voted in their first election in 1920. In 1924 the first women governors were elected. Other places remained more restricted, some schools still did not let women admission. Younger women, called “flappers” did not seem interested in women’s right fromplaygroundstopolitics.com http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cartoon-1920s-Womens-Suffrage-Prohibition-Your-vote-will-stop-them-/190860751567

A New Mass Culture Henry Ford invented the assembly line in 1913 The assembly line would cut down the time it took to make cars Before the assembly line 1 car might take 12 hours to make, after the assembly line it would take about 1 ½ hours to make Cars gave people the ability to travel far, so people in rural areas wouldn't be so isolated, or cut off from the rest of the world http://history1900s.about.com/

A New Mass Culture ( Continued ) The radio was another important part of the new culture, it was introduced in 1920 It introduced a way to hear about the weather, news and other events Movies were very popular, millions of americans watched them weekly Animated movies started in the early 1920’s The Walt Disney company was founded in 1923 https://lifeinthetwenties.wikispaces.com

Social Conflict John Scopes was a High School biology teacher, in Dayton Tennessee, accused for violating law by teaching the kids a theory of evolution The theory was devised from Charles Darwin, in the 19th century, it claimed that all life evolved, or developed from simpler forms over a long period of time When African Americans came back from the war they hope for equality at home The 1920’s saw large numbers of Africans American move north in what is called the Great Migration, usually went to cities Some of the worst violence occurred in Chicago, where 13 days of rioting in 1919 left 38 people dead and some 500 injured

Social Conflict (Continued) The social tensions of the 1920s were also expressed in the growth of the Klu Klux Klan The whites-only Klan scorned not just the blacks but all immigrants, Catholics, and Jews Their powers spread from the South to the Midwest and the West In Oregon and Indiana, the KKK backed candidates were elected as governors Several public scandals at the end of the 1920s cost the Klan much of its support
