Joseph’s Obedience December 9

Remember that time? When have you experienced a surprising change of plans? Most of you have probably made plans for your Christmas celebrations Having your plans changed can be a challenge Following God’s plan for you will often require change in your life, but it’s worth it.

Listen for Joseph’s initial response. Matthew 1:18-19 (NIV) This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

Disrupted Plans According to verse 18, what happened to Mary while she and Joseph were engaged? What thoughts and feelings do you think Joseph had, hearing this news about his bride-to-be? God interrupted Joseph’s and Mary’s plans for their future. In what ways might God interrupt your plans?

Disrupted Plans In their culture, what options did Joseph have for dealing with this situation with Mary? According to our scripture passage, what positive character qualities did Joseph have? How did Joseph’s “being a just/righteous man” affect his decision?

Disrupted Plans Why do you think God chose this sequence of events surrounding the birth of the Messiah? Why not wait until Mary and Joseph were married? It would have been much less embarrassing.

Listen for God’s plan. Matthew 1:20-23 (NIV) But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Listen for God’s plan. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us."

God’s Plan Revealed As a bit of an aside, note how the angel addressed Joseph as “son of David.” This was not the name of Joseph’s father. So, how was Joseph’s ancestry significant?

God’s Plan Revealed Why did Joseph change his plans to divorce Mary? How does God help us overcome our fears to follow His directions, especially in a change of plans?

View “What Could This Mean” Video God’s Plan Revealed View “What Could This Mean” Video

God’s Plan Revealed Agree or disagree ? Agree Disagree Joseph could have chosen to resist God’s plan for his future with Mary. Agree Disagree

God’s Plan Revealed Joseph was obedient to God in a very stressful situation. What kinds of direction or encouragement would God want us to know in stressful situations?

Listen for Joseph’s response. Matthew 1:24-25 (NIV) When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Align with God’s Plan How did Joseph respond to his dream? What do these verses teach us about Joseph? Joseph responded positively to the angel’s declarations … why do we sometimes fear God working through us in unique or unexpected ways?

Align with God’s Plan What happens when we limit God and don’t go along with His way of accomplishing His will? Consider there were some things Joseph did not know of the future. How should God’s Christmas plan influence your plans all year long?

Application Adjust Your Thinking. Maybe your perspective on something is out of sync with God’s. Pray and ask God to help you see life from His point of view. Pray for the mind of Christ

Application Adjust Your Trust. A key component to adjusting your life to God’s involves trust. Review the different areas of your life Identify the ways you should fully trust God in each of those areas.

Application Adjust Your Obedience. The essence of trust is obedience. What is a specific area in your life where you need to obey God this week? Wake up now from spiritual slumber to a life of obedience.
