Schematic of the principles of mass spectrometry (MS). Schematic of the principles of mass spectrometry (MS). Three basic modules for the interrogation of a sample containing analytes (eg, proteins) of interest are shown. 1. Source of ionizing radiation (eg, electrospray [ESI] or matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization [MALDI]). 2.
