1 John 5

(1-5) John links the love of God to an actual lifestyle lived God’s way. Although the new covenant had replaced the Torah’s ritual processes, it had not overthrown God’s design for holiness- which can ever only be an undertaking made in love.

(6-12) John reveals how Jesus Himself was not simply phantom or immaterial form that had made itself discernible, but truly flesh and blood humanity who was truly God. Note the three witnesses testifying.

(13-20) There is only one name that has power to save people from darkness and evil- the name of God’s only begotten Son. His power has already and ultimately will save us, even if it takes time to see the fullness of salvation realized.

(21) The address encourages us to remember our truest identities before all else, yet warns us that the temptation will always remain to see another good as most important to life: Circumstances, objects, relationships, security, abilities. We always act towards what we most desire.
