Keeping Children Safe Online INTERNET SAFETY NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2018 It is important that parents and carers have regular conversations with their children about how to keep safe online. Setting parental controls can also help protect young children when they are online. Parental controls are designed to help parents and carers manage their child’s online activities. There are various types, some of which are free. However, nothing is totally secure and they do not replace the need for adults to support and advise children using the internet. For detailed guidance on all the different types of control, you can visit the Internet Matters website. This gives you the chance to set up a personalised list of the controls used in your home on all your different devices. There is also advice on how to use all the various controls, with videos and step-by-step instructions. Further information can be accessed here: www.internetmatters.org Keeping Children Safe Online This is a fun app for parents and children to play together and also help keep children safe online. The app is a great way to have conversations with your child about practical ways to be resilient and have a good time online. The app has eight quiz categories covering topics such as cyberbullying and gaming. The app can be downloaded for free on the iTunes app store and Google Play store.

Further information can be accessed here: www.nationonliesafety.com Free to play The game is free to play, however; if played on the Xbox, you will need an Xbox gold account. It can be addictive Games can last 20 minutes but this can vary. Children can feel angry when they lose a game and keep playing until they win. It can be played on the go The game was released on mobile, meaning it can be played without a games console in the home. Parents may be unaware of how long children are playing the game for.   Can talk to strangers Players can communicate with other players during the game. Players tend to wear headphones which makes it difficult for parents to hear what is being said and any inappropriate language. No proof of age required People can sign up using their Facebook or Google account or using an email address. If your child is under the age of 12, it is important to see if they have the game downloaded. Weapons and violence The game has a rating of 12+. However, the game does contain violence and weapons such as crossbows, rifles, grenade launchers and more. Further information can be accessed here: www.nationonliesafety.com
