“Raymond’s Run” Toni Cade Bambara

Toni Cade Bambara 1939-1995 Writing displays an interest in African American heritage and concern for others. NYC native; educated in Europe and U.S. Teacher (pre-k to college) Urges readers to take her stories “seriously as valuable lessons in human behavior and examples of living history.” “Raymond’s Run” is a story Toni has stated she wished she read while she was growing up.

Insight into “Raymond’s Run” This is a story about respect and the many ways to earn it. Squeaky is the fastest runner in her class and she cares for her “not quite right” brother, Raymond, whom she protects with fierce loyalty. During the annual May Day races, she learns valuable lessons about herself, about Gretchen, her competitor, and about Raymond and his need for respect and pride.
