Sentient Robot By: Jorge Chen

What is a Sentient Robot? A sentient robot is a machine capable of carrying out a various complex function automatically. With the ability to feel, perceive, and have subjective experiences. This allows them to interact with other being.

Question Is it possible to build an inorganic sentient being (sentient robot) in the future? What technology will we need? With the advancement of technology, it is possible to build sentient robot being that is inorganic that possess intelligence that rival human intelligence.

What level of sentience will the robot possess? A Sentient robot will possess a Type (IV) AI: self-awareness or artificial super- intelligence (ASI). This will enable sentient robot to form representation about themselves and interact with the environment and other life forms. The robot will become self-aware, knowing about their internal state and how others might feel. Researcher in the future will be able to build the “Theory of mind” into the robots. To have a sense of individuality.

What will the sentient robot be capable of? The robot will be made to resemble a human body (humanoid robot). It is to provide the robot the capability of interacting with the environments that are built by humans. Robot will be made out of the image of the creator at first, but later on robots will be able to make better version of themselves (reproduce). It will usually be built with metallic frame to help sustain its weight.

Relation to Science Fiction In the film “I, Robot,” Sonny is the only robot that possess artificial intelligence. In all robot’s core code they have the three law that restrict them from harming humans. Due to sonny having artificial intelligence he chose to ignore the three law and kill his creator. Despite Sonny being built from inorganic material he exhibit awareness.

In reality and “why” Researcher are only able to achieve type (II) AI: Limited memory. The artificial intelligence is able to recall past events to handle new situations. This type of artificial intelligence is in smartphones, computers, and self- driving cars. Newer and more flexible material are also being made that can help the movement of humanoid robot such as graphene. Human spend most of their life on mundane task. Using sentient robot life would be more interesting by leaving all the dull task to them. Sentient robot will be able to build the world for humans without any predetermine instruction needed.
