#43 Chapter 20 Section 2 The New Frontier OBJECTIVE: Understand the policies of the New Frontier (JFK) and the Great Society (LBJ).

I. The Promise of Progress New Frontier- policies of JFK administration. JFK had difficulty getting his ideas passed because of a conservative Congress.

II. New Frontier Foreign Agenda Peace Corps- American volunteers assist developing nations, great success. Alliance for Progress- economic, technical assistance to Latin America. Attempt to deter spread of communism in Latin America. Similar to Marshall Plan.

III. Race to the Moon 1961- Soviets first to space, U.S. follows one month later. July 1969- Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. Led to the rise of university science programs, new industries, and new technologies.

IV. New Frontier Domestic Agenda JFK’s domestic goals: Reduce poverty Stop racial injustices Cut taxes President John F. Kennedy sent federal troops to Mississippi in 1962 to quell riots after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the University of Mississippi to admit James Meredith. Meredith, who became the first black student to attend the institution, is seen here (center) being escorted by Justice Department officials on his first day at the university.

V. Tragedy in Dallas November 22, 1963, JFK shot & killed by Lee Harvey Oswald while riding in motorcade in Dallas. Vice-President Lyndon Johnson succeeds JFK.
