TEK B.4B Concept: Investigate and Identify Cellular Processes Including Synthesis of New Molecules

Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of leaf cells Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of leaf cells. Roots absorb water, which is transported up the plant to the leaves. Leaves absorb carbon dioxide in the air through stomata in the epidermal layer of leaves. There are two phases of photosynthesis, a light reaction and a dark reaction. The light reaction requires light to complete a series of reactions that split the water molecule and release oxygen. Oxygen is released back to the atmosphere through the stomata openings. The dark reaction is also called the Calvin Cycle, which is a series of reactions that converts carbon dioxide to form glucose sugar.
