Order of Operations

S.W.B.A.T Students will be able to solve mathematical expressions and use their knowledge of order of operations to derive the correct answer

P.E.M.D.A.S What is P.E.M.D.A.S? This is the order of operations and it will help you remember what mathematical operations must be performed first

What do these letters stand for? P= Parenthesis E= Exponents M= Multiplication D= Division A= Addition S= Subtraction

How am I going to remember that? I learned: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

When do I use Order of Operations? You use order of operations all the time When given problems with more than one step you need to know what exactly you have to do first If you do not follow the Order of Operations then you will not get the correct answer

Example Lets see how not using the order of operations can get you the wrong answer Solve: x 4 With Order of Operations: x Without Order of Operations x 4 10 x 4 40

Example 150 ÷ ( x 8) – ÷ (6 + 3 x 8) – 5 = 150 ÷ (6 + 24) ÷ ( ) – 5 = 150 ÷ 30 – ÷ 30 – 5 = = 0

Partner Problems x (5 + 4) ÷ 3 – 7 9 – 5 ÷ (8 – 3) x 2 + 6
