Come Back, Liza Caribbean Syncopation With its notes and accents placed on the weak beat, or offbeat, syncopation can be found in music worldwide. Here are some of the syncopated rhythm patterns in the Caribbean calypso song “Come Back, Liza.” Play or clap them and then identify where each pattern occurs in the song. 1. 2. 3.

Come Back, Liza Sometimes, syncopation can be made clearer by notating the same pattern in two different ways. For example, play or clap these patterns from “Come Back, Liza.” Do they sound the same? Describe how the notation differs.

Come Back, Liza In the second pattern on the previous slide, a tie was used to connect the second and third eighth notes. Here is another syncopated pattern found in the song. Identify which notes are tied, and then play or clap the pattern. Clap the pattern again, this time without the tie. Describe how this changes the syncopation.

Come Back, Liza Play or clap each of the patterns below. Then analyze them to determine Which notes are tied. Where syncopation occurs within each pattern. 1. 2. 3. This pattern should be familiar to you. Describe how the syncopation here differs from the syncopation in the examples above.

Come Back, Liza Not all rhythm patterns in “Come Back, Liza” are syncopated. Play or clap this example. How can you notate this differently to create syncopation?
