Teacher: Mustapha KADIRI Grammar: Present Simple Teacher: Mustapha KADIRI

Study these examples: They express a habit or a daily routine. I everyday get up at 7 o’clock. Fatima walks to school everyday. Jack always listens to music. Ali doesn’t go to school on weekends. They express a habit or a daily routine.

Study these examples: They express a scientific or natural fact The sun rises from the East. Water boils at 100C° The butter melts under heat The earth is around Ahmmed is a boy Mohammed is my father. They express a scientific or natural fact

The Use: 1) To express a habit or a daily routine. There are two main uses of Present Simple Tense: 1) To express a habit or a daily routine. 2) To express a scientific or natural fact or truth. 3) It can be used with Adverbs of Frequency.

Adverbs of Frequency ALWAYS  USUALLY  OFTEN  SOMETIMES  RARELY  SELDOM  HARDLY EVER  NEVER 

The Use Of Adverbs Of Frequency The Present Simple tense is often used with the so called adverbs of frequency. These adverbs express how often an action happens. They are placed before the main verb but after the verb to be. I always get up early. Does she often take a taxi? They are usually at home. Mum is sometimes angry in the mornings. My brother never studies at night.

Exceptions: Verbs ending with ch / sh / ss / x / o / Take (es) with subject pronouns: He / She / It /. Ex: He teaches English. / She misses the bus. / The train goes quickly. He mixes the colors. She finishes at ten o’clock. Verbs ending with a consonant + y, the y changes to i + es: Ex: The verb study. We say: He studies English.

But in the verb play we don’t change ( y ) to ( I ) because it is preceded by a vowel (a). Ex: He plays football.

The Affirmative Form: The rule: Subject + Verb in the simple present. Example: I / You / We / They read a book. He / She / It reads a book.

The Negative Form: The rule: I / You / We / They + Do not + Verb in the infinitive. He / She / It + Does not + Verb in the infinitive. Ex: We don’t study at University. He doesn’t get up early.

The Interrogative Form: The rule: (Wh) question + Do + I / You / We / They + Verb in infinitive. (Wh) question + Does + He / She / It + Verb in infinitive. EX: When do you play football? Where does he play football?
