Crossing the bar Alfred, Lord Tennyson Poem By: Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar. Alfred, Lord Tennyson Poem By:

Author Born on August 6th, 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire, England. He was the 4th child out of 12 and when he WAS 12, he wrote a 6,000-line epic poem. When he got older, he attended Trinity College in Cambridge. He then published Poems, Chiefly Lyrical. By 1836, he was engaged to Emily Sellwood and lost her because her family called it off. Lastly, by 1841, he was established as the most popular poet of the Victorian era.

Background Of Crossing the bar This poem was written in 1889,3 years before the death of Alfred, lord Tennyson. Witten in an ABAB style, The poem was made to describe an accepting way towards death. He uses the sandbar to describe the barrier between life and death. And that the idea of “crossing over” into the other world, is an adventure in itself.

My interpretation My honest interpretation of this poem is that, at some point in your life, you are going to have to face the fact that you are going to die. We all know though, that there is two ways to deal with it. There is absolutely no easy way to do this but you do have two options. You can either run from it, or face it head on. This poem, is an interpretation of how to face it head on.

Literary devices -Stanza 1) “sunset and evening star…..” -imagery 2) “to full for sound and foam,….” “Turns again Home” -Rhyme Scheme 3) “Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; ” -Stanza

Let it be -Beatles And when the broken hearted people When I find myself in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be And in my hour of darkness She is standing right in front of me Let it be, let it be Whisper words of wisdom, let it be And when the broken hearted people Living in the world agree There will be an answer, let it be For though they may be parted There is still a chance that they will see Yeah there will be an answer, let it be Let it be -Beatles

Let it be (continued) Let it be, let be Ah let it be, yeah let it be Whisper words of wisdom, let it be And when the night is cloudy There is still a light that shines on me Shine on until tomorrow, let it be I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be Yeah let it be, let it be Let it be, yeah let it be Oh there will be an answer, let it be Let it be, let it be http://www.youtube.com/wa tch?nomobile=1&edufilter=E - nIA6VrvGA5Avu83FoomA&v =ajCYQL8ouqw

Song in Relation to the poem Ok very simple. “ Let it Be” and “crossing the bar” connect due to one thing, death. Now, they’re not about death in themselves. They focus more on how to handle death, how to accept dying.

Conclusion In the end, this poem is interpreted to be a poem about how to deal with dying and “crossing the bar” between life in death and how “crossing the bar” could be and adventure in itself. There is no need to fear death because it is believed that death is always going to happen, you aren’t going to be able to stop it. So there is not point in fearing it.
